Jagdish Bhagwati (Speaker)

Jagdish Bhagwati, is University Professor at Columbia University and Senior Fellow in International Economics at the Council on Foreign Relations.  He has served as Economic Policy Adviser to the Director General of GATT, Special Adviser to the United Nations on Globalization, and External Adviser to the World Trade Organization.  His most recent books are Free Trade Today (Princeton University Press, 2002) and In Defense of Globalization (Oxford University Press, 2004).

A native of India, Professor Bhagwati graduated from Cambridge University in 1956 with a first in Economics Tripos and received his graduate education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Oxford University.  In 1961 he became Professor of Economics at the Indian Statistical Institute, then served as Professor of International Trade at the Delhi School of Economics. In 1968 he joined the faculty of MIT, where he taught for 12 years and became the Ford International Professor of Economics.  In 1980 he joined the faculty of Columbia University.

Professor Bhagwati has published more than three hundred articles and has authored or edited over fifty volumes; his books have been translated into sixteen languages.  He also contributes frequently to the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and the Financial Times and writes reviews for The New Republic and the Times Literary Supplement.
